Het kinderharnas van prins Maurits
Maurits, prins van Nassau, c. 1578
Maurice, Prince of Nassau, later Prince of Orange, was about twelve years old when he sat for this striking portrait. Just a few years later he would succeed his father William the Silent as stadhouder of most of the Netherlands and leader of the Dutch revolt against Spanish rule. The martial accoutrements with which the boy prince was adorned were entirely appropriate to one destined to be acclaimed among the greatest commanders of the age. In 2004 sculptor and master-craftsman Gotscha Lagidse was commissioned by the Royal Netherlands Army Museum to recreate Maurice’s armour as depicted in the portrait. The result is itself a work of art.
