Now here’s a thing. Thanks to this very interesting article on Spiked I have discovered the voluminous archive of Bukowski manuscripts, mostly typescripts in fact, at Bukowski.net. The article by Alexander Adams deals with the posthumous bowdlerization of Bukowski’s work by his long-time editor John Martin of Black Sparrow Press. It seems that Martin, a teetotal Christian Scientist, took advantage of his role as Bukowski’s literary executor to “clean up” the author’s nachlass for publication. Readers possessing such posthumous collections as Betting on the Muse can now compare the published text with Bukowski’s autographs, or simply enjoy the vast collection of poems just as they left the typewriter.
