Smoking is Cool #28

Today is the birthday of William Faulkner, an author I have just begun to discover. Though I have long been an admirer of Southern writers such as Tennessee Williams and Carson McCullers I had never got round to reading the granddaddy of them all until I picked up Faulkner’s Light in August in a charity shop a few weeks ago. I found it to be a quite extraordinary work: masterfully written, compellingly characterized and permeated by an unforgettable, dark-hued intensity. I’m looking forward to reading more of his works.
