Hedy Lamarr

While Hedy Lamarr’s face was certainly pretty, she also possessed an unusual and perhaps unique ability for a screen idol: a genuine aptitude for science. With composer George Antheil she co-invented a method of radio transmission that is the basis of many wireless technologies in use today. From the little I’ve read she was a troubled character with a turbulent emotional life, which is not so surprising given her very incongruous talents. Apart from a dimly remembered childhood viewing of Samson and Delilah I’ve not seen any of her films. It seems there were few masterpieces among them and perhaps one day her contribution to science will be better remembered than her movies. She would have been 99 today.
