Collages by Max Ernst for The House of Fear by Leonora Carrington, his sometime lover and collaborator. One of the very last of the original Surrealists, Carrington died this May at the age of 94.

Dorothea Tanning is one hundred years old today. Though probably still best known as the last wife of Max Ernst, she is a brilliant painter and sculptor in her own right, and has a good claim to be the greatest living Surrealist, and one of the last. Fellow Ernst-lover Leonora Carrington is another survivor of the era, though a mere 93 years old. It’s astonishing to think Ms. Tanning was born before the First World War, the Cabaret Voltaire and the first stirrings of the movement to which she would contribute so much. I hope that she is well enough to enjoy her century.

Max Ernst

Max Ernst and Dorothea Tanning, two of my favourite artists and seemingly an admirably well-matched couple. Ernst died in 1976 but Tanning is, somewhat improbably, still alive and active. I will be posting some of her works in due course.
